FACE OUR FEARS: We are not a serious country.
Not only did a reporter accidentally get added to a group chat where Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, was texting about war plans, but now it seems the Republicans want to dismiss the action without any repercussions.
Interesting how when it was Hillary Clinton’s emails this was a whole different story. But more on that in a moment.
First, I want to dig into what this means as a journalist and why it matters that the right wing media is trying to deflect and discredit journalist Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic.
CNN reported that Goldberg was inadvertently texted on a group chat about military strikes in Yemen that provided sensitive information about the possible attack two hours before the bombs dropped on Houthi rebel targets. This text exchange on the messaging app Signal was confirmed to be authentic by the Trump administration.
As an aside: This regime is using Signal to avoid any of their communications from being retained. This is straight out of Project 2025. These fascists are using this third party software so they can avoid subpoenas. This sure is convenient when you are trying to overtake the government and don’t want any evidence that could implicate you should this all go south.
And while there has been no apology or recognition of this incredible breach of national security, what concerns me is the Trump administration trying to force Goldberg’s hand in revealing sensitive information to prove that he saw what he saw.
If Goldberg is an ethical journalist, he won’t take the bait, knowing that national security could be at risk. This regime knows that and is using it to their advantage.
This coverup is being amplified by the right-wing MAGA-controlled media, allowing them to ignore this situation all together, downplay it like Jesse Watters who said “we’ve all texted the wrong person before,” or call it “media hysteria” to embarrass the Republicans.
Nah, you guys did that all on your own.
Hegseth even went so far as to say that Goldberg was a “discredited so-called journalist who has made a profession of peddling hoaxes.” This further erosion of trust between any media that is critical of the Trump administration and the audience only aids in the collapse of the media as a pillar of democracy. Without a free press that stands up and speaks truth to power, they are merely acting as a PR company for the administration, willing to do their bidding in exchange for access.
But to make matters worse, it isn’t just about the MAGA-media’s lack of integrity or willingness to ask the tough questions around this issue that has people angry.
REALITY CHECK: It's the blatant misogyny for me.
Hillary Clinton’s emails. Remember those?
I’m not here to defend her private email servers. What I would like to point out, however, was that they wanted to lock her up for those and now you have people like Josh Hawley shrugging this off and saying that democrats are “griping about who’s on a text message.”
At what point do we note that there are clearly two sets of rules: One for Democrats, one for Republicans and one for women and one for men where men can make mistakes…big ones…and there won’t be any repercussions. Why? Who’s going to check Hegseth? His party surely won’t. The current Democrats in leadership won’t do anything meaningful.
So here we are. With no opposition party and a fascist regime running wild, they have made an embarrassment of this nation, degraded the media, demeaned women and put us all at risk.
Maybe it’s time to bring back DEI? Because these men are certainly not the best or brightest.
Until next time, take care of yourselves and each other.
- In solidarity, Natalie
