FACE YOUR FEAR: They are coming for our social security
Elon Musk, a non-elected bureaucrat and richest man on earth took a break from cutting essential services to millions of Americans and laying off workers all around this country to ride in the presidential limo with President Trump and first lady last night on their way to the address in front of a joint session of Congress.
And Musk sat in the gallery while Trump called him out and praised him as the head of DOGE. All while Medicaid and services for our country’s most vulnerable are being unnecessarily and cruelly slashed.
According to Newsweek, recent federal initiatives from President Donald Trump and his administration have led to the closure of multiple Social Security offices, raising concerns about the accessibility of services for beneficiaries nationwide.
Trump, in collaboration with Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has directed the General Services Administration (GSA) to terminate leases on approximately 7,500 federal offices, including those of the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Here's the list of Social Security Offices that have been or are in the process of being closed by DOGE:
White Plains, New York
Logan, West Virginia
Carlsbad, California
Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina
Batesville, Arkansas
Columbus, Ohio
Okemos, Michigan
Nacogdoches, Texas
Green Bay, Wisconsin
Las Vegas, Nevada
As you can see below, people are being impacted no matter where they live or who they voted for.
REALITY CHECK: Not only are social security offices closing, but cutting dental care is now on the table.
Because who needs teeth?
“Without coverage, many will delay care or turn to emergency rooms, driving up health care costs and worsening health outcomes," said Melissa Burroughs, director of public policy at CareQuest Institute for Oral Health.
Axios reports that if Congress cuts Medicaid funding to states to help extend tax cuts for the ultrawealthy, dental care for adults could be one of the first casualties as legislators and governors re-sort priorities and try to make do with less.
Make due with less? Why is it always on working people to make due with less? Why can’t rich people ever tighten their belts? Buy one less yacht?
And as you may recall, the House of Representatives adopted a federal budget resolution in February that calls on a key committee that governs Medicaid to find at least $880 billion in spending cuts over the next 10 years.
The spending blueprint doesn't mandate cuts to Medicaid. But the committee would essentially have to make changes to federal funding for the program in order to reach the spending target, likely pushing more program costs onto states.
Angry yet?
WIRED reports that some members of Musk’s team are making six-figure salaries. Where are they getting that money?
You guessed it. From the American taxpayer. Some staffers at Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency are drawing robust taxpayer-funded salaries from the federal agencies they are slashing and burning.
Jeremy Lewin, one of the DOGE employees tasked with dismantling USAID, who has also played a role in DOGE’s incursions into the National Institutes of Health and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is listed as making just over $167,000 annually,
Kyle Schutt, a software engineer at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, is listed as drawing a salary of $195,200 through GSA,
Nate Cavanaugh, a 28-year-old tech entrepreneur who has taken a visible internal role interviewing GSA employees as part of DOGE’s work at the agency, is listed as being paid just over $120,500 per year.
So to recap: The richest man in the world traveling around on the people’s dime who has most recently called Social Security a ponzi scheme has taken it upon himself to bestow his beta dogs six figure salaries to destroy our social services all the while we can’t get our teeth cleaned and will no longer have a local Social Security office.
It's very clear that we are in a class war and it will take all of us standing in solidarity and in opposition to the dangerous billionaire class to take back our power and build a country that benefits the many and not just the privileged few.
Until next time, take care of yourselves, and each other. In solidarity, Natalie
